Fall migration begins

The hummingbird activity has picked up dramatically; by next week I expect we’ll have swarms at the feeders. We’re starting to see other travelers as well. It’s an exciting time!

It seems to be the tiniest ones that perch on the fence, maybe because they don’t get harassed the way they do when they are at the feeders.
I’m working on my hummingbird ID but am easily confused still.
Black-crested titmouse
Carolina wren
We see so many white winged doves–but I am always startled when I see how strange they look close up.

This week at Canyon Lake

It’s not quite time for the fall migration, so the birds we see aren’t spectacular or rare, but they’re fun to watch nonetheless. Here are some photos from the last few days:

It’s only the youngest hummingbirds who perch on the fence. I don’t know why.
I think this is a rufous hummingbird.
Female black-chinned. I think.
This male cardinal is molting; it’s kind of embarrassing to take his photo but he will have to suffer for my art.
The female doesn’t look so great either, I guess.
Black crested titmouse. I wonder if it’s one of the babies we had in the birdhouse up by the cabin last spring.
We have a number of canyon wrens, which somehow seems special because we’re at the very edge of their range. I like to think they are here because we are good hosts but it’s possible that I’m delusional. They have a distinctive call that always makes me happy.
No banana for scale, but if there was, it would dwarf this tiny lizard, so cute.
Lots of boats on the lake for races over the weekend.
Leeloo, Ruthie, Veta. Such good dogs. I look forward to the day when I can get back down to the terrace with Veta, who enjoys the same intensity of activity that I do. We are a good match.

Wicked and Wild

The jet-skis have been seeing some action! They have been named “Wicked” and “Wild”. Jon has been out a number of times, and Suzy a couple, so far. I believe that Jon is living his dream.

Lizard

An unknown (to us) but common lizard

Let’s see if we can figure out how to put photos here again; it’s been a while. This is a test lizard.
