On the last day of her visit, Ada drew a compass rose around the fire pit, and found the direction of New Braunfels definitively. Sadly, the chalk is very hard to see against the flagstones, but we have also determined that the fire pit is pretty closely aligned to the cardinal directions, so it’s relatively easy to use as a compass. I look forward to the New Braunfels argument continuing even in the presence of actual map information 🙂

Oh good, I thought my sense of direction might be off by 180 degrees, but it’s only off by 90 degrees.

This area is terribly confusing. It has taken a lot of work for me just to be fairly clear on where the sun rises and sets! The lake is squiggly and is, annoyingly, not oriented properly north and south. And I-35, which goes “north” and “south”–well, to go to San Antonio we are going almost as much west as south. And I-10 goes every which way. FM 306 runs north from New Braunfels, then northwest until it gets to Hancock (Brookshire Brothers), then takes a left and heads due west until it ends at 281. Who thought it was a good idea to abandon the grid pattern??
